Cloud backup with CrashPlan

September 16, 2014 Jim 1 Comment

CrashPlan is a cloud backup provider that provides a client app. They have a free, credir-cardless trial program. I downloaded the app and signed up.

I picked a directory with files that averaged about 50 MB in size.

And started the backup.

cp dash uploading

Then I looked at the firewall to see how fast the upload was.

crashplan performance

10 Mb/s. More than twice as fast as Google Drive or Dropbox Pro, but nowhere near as fast as Amazon S3 with concurrent file operations.

I asked CrashPlan about the speed, and they said that they quote rates of between 2 Mb/s and 5 Mb/s, so I should count myself lucky to get 10.
