How do I buy pictures for myself?First off, this is my hobby, not my business. I'm not trying to make money out of it, but I do want to get my pictures to people who will enjoy them, and help the world a bit along the way. As you'll see, I've worked out a way that not only doesn't make me any money, the more successful I am, the more it costs me. The deal is this: you send me a check made out to Americares (or some other charity we both like, if you've got something against them). I send you the picture. I send the check to the charity. You get the tax deduction. You can display the picture any way you want, but you can't reproduce it in any way or publish it. Back to TopWhat format are the pictures you ship? What process? How permanent? The pictures are printed using a Epson 9800 digital inkjet printer. This device uses a mainly pigment-based inkset, and produces prints that have better archival properties than normal color photos. The paper size is 17 by 22 inches, with the image filling most of the paper (the images are different shapes, so I can't be more specific). I use Hahnemuhle Photo Rag or Arches Infinity paper. The pictures are unmounted and signed. By special arrangement, I can make prints on 22 x 30 308 gsm Arches Infinity paper These cost more, and they're a pain to ship. Back to TopWhy don't you use normal optical photo printing techniques? The process I use produces higher-quality results. I can remove backscatter and small defects. I can control color better. I can achieve better calibration and repeatability than I can in the darkroom: I can get the dodging and burning right in Photoshop, and every print is the same. What if I don't like the picture when I get it?If you're worried about this, let me know and I won't send in your check for a week or so, to give you time to look at the print. If you don't like it, send it back and I'll tear up the check. How much?$400 a picture. Don't forget, you get the tax deduction. How do I buy publication rights?Email me, and we'll discuss it. In general, the fee will depend on the use. Non-commercial uses will be less expensive (possibly free), and fees for commercial use are intentionally high (I'm not a commercial photographer), depending on how many people will see the picture, whether the picture is attributed to me or not, and the nature of the publication. Back to TopWhy are your pictures so abstract? What's wrong with fish portraits?Probably because I was a photographer long before I became an underwater photographer. In my land photography, I'm not much on straight documentation. I guess that carries into the ocean as well. On the other hand, I am fascinated by strange animals and behavior, and occasionally I'll just record it. Back to Top
